 Fort Miles, commissioned in 1941, represented the last generation of W.W.II Forts. Eighteen harbor defense commands protected America’s coastlines, among them, the Harbor Defense of the Delaware. Fort Miles provided the first line of defense of the Delaware River and Bay from 1941 through 1945. Its charge was the protection of the Delaware Estuary-the gateway to important industrial, military and commercial centers. The building of Fort Miles symbolized the pinnacle in a century and a half-long coastal defense policy.

 The Spanish galleon, Nuestra Senora de Atocha, and its sister ship, Santa Margarita, were sailing from Havana, Cuba to Seville, Spain. Off the coast of Florida, the vessels encountered hurricane-force winds and high waves which dashed the ships against a coral reef. Within minutes the ships went under and passengers, crew and cargo were lost. Knowing that the Atocha was over-laden with a cargo of gold, silver ingots, emeralds and jewelry, the search for the vessel took on great importance to many treasure seekers. However, signs of the ship and its treasure eluded everyone for nearly 360 years.

The Delaware State House was the first permanent capitol building in Dover, Delaware. Begun in 1787 and completed by May 1792, this Georgian-style structure was originally home to both state and Kent County governments. Located on the historic Green in Dover, the State House has served as a focal point in the state's civic life for over two centuries and continues to hold a special place in the eyes of Delawareans and visitors alike.
